Silestone Counters

Silestone is a countertop option that is made of quartz. This surface is made to look like granite and other stone counter options, but it is not granite. While many people feel that this is a negative, Silestone counters can actually have some benefits.

Benefits of Choosing Silestone

Because Silestone is a manufactured stone, it does not have the negative aspects of granite. Just this year it was announced that granite can release radon. Radon is a carcinogenic compound, meaning that it could potentially increase a person’s chances of developing cancer. Silestone, on the other hand, does not do this.

Another benefit of Silestone is that it is more durable than granite. Some cleaning products cannot be used on granite because they would hurt the stone. With Silestone, there are fewer restrictions.

Silestone also comes with an anti-bacterial shield on it. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for bacteria to grow on the countertop. This makes Silestone a sanitary countertop and also eliminates much of the need for harsh cleaning chemicals that can be dangerous to children.

One thing that granite has an edge in is the pattern choice. Silestone is not a completely natural stone and is made to look like granite. While manufacturers generally do a really good job, and it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference, Silestone does have a tendency to have repetitive patterns in it, which granite does not. In addition, it would be possible for a neighbor to have a nearly identical piece of Silestone in their kitchen.
