Renewable Flooring
In recent years, many alternatives to traditional flooring have emerged. Two of the most popular are bamboo and cork. They both will provide beautiful, durable flooring while being renewable resources as well.
Bamboo has an exotic appearance. It can be purchased in either solid or engineered planks. The flooring uses the tongue and groove method for assembly. Bamboo is a very hard wood material and thus very durable. In fact, it is 25% harder than the white and red oaks which are commonly used in hardwood flooring. Bamboo is also pliable, which allows it to withstand blunt impacts without bending or denting. It can be installed over concrete floors.
Bamboo has 25% the yield of hardwood and leaves a very minor impact on the natural habitat when collected. In addition, it fully renews itself every five to six years. Bamboo is available in two different colors with a variation of shades. Naturally, it is a lighter tone but when carbonized it becomes a rich caramel color.
Cork is also another wonderful flooring option. It can be harvested every six to ten years without damaging the tree. It is not only beautiful but can deaden sound, is resistant to mold and mildew, and has insulating properties. While cork flooring can be used in many areas, it is not good for those which are frequently wet, such as a bathroom.
It is distributed in either engineered planks or tiles which have a tongue and groove system. However, because it is a natural product, it does fade with sunlight.
Both flooring types have health benefits of not harboring allergens or microorganisms. In addition, dust and animal dander is minimal.
