Paint

Picking the right paint can be quite the challenge. With such an array of colors and products on the market, it’s hard to know which will be best. Consider the purpose of the room when selecting a color. Is it suited towards cool or warm colors? The size of the room is important as well. Lighter colors will make the space feel open and allow for versatile decorating. Darker colors will give the area a cozy feel and dramatic effect. Does the room have architectural details such as columns, chair rails or crown molding which should be emphasized? By painting these white, the contrast will add visual interest.

Should paint be selected with sheen? In general, flat paints are intended for low traffic areas. For high traffic areas, consider a little bit of sheen. The sheen is much more suitable for cleaning and good for rooms which get a lot of use. A high gloss is recommended on banisters and railings as these surfaces can be easily cleaned. Water based paints are best for painting indoors. They last longer and the odor is not too pungent.

When trying to finalize a color, a favorite piece of furniture can be a great inspiration. Remember, a custom color can be created for you. Bright colors are recommended to fill up an empty room that is lacking furniture. Make sure you can live with the color all year long when selecting.

Do not buy cheap paint. Higher quality looks better, is easier to apply, and requires less paint. Before buying, test out a sample of paint on a wall for a few days to judge it in different light conditions.
