Choosing Your Wood Flooring: Room Use

Whenever a person picks out wood flooring for their home, the room’s use needs to be kept in mind. This is because of the varying degrees of maintenance needed and hardiness of flooring materials. In addition, some rooms are just not good for wood flooring.

Foyer/Entry

A foyer or entry is frequently more formal than a kitchen. The current trend is to make a design statement in this area, generally by employing custom, one-of-a-kind designs to the area. These designs are very popular. In order to protect the floor, it is frequently necessary to use walk-off mats or an area rug. This also keeps wear down on the floor which makes it look its best longer.

Kitchens & Family Rooms

These two areas are the most common spaces for wood flooring installation in both new constructions and remodeling. It is important to keep in mind that extremely dark flooring as well as white or bleached flooring do not hold up here. This is because of the large amount of traffic in the rooms. In addition, the presence of foods and liquids in the kitchen hurts the flooring.

Formal Living & Dining Rooms

Because these rooms have a more traditional setting, dark flooring is often chosen. The color of the flooring is also generally coordinated with the color of the furniture being used in the room. For example, if the dining room set has a red tint to it, the flooring will frequently have a red tint to it as well. The flooring generally does not match the furniture but compliments it. Because dark floors are so popular in the formals, it is important to note that the darker the flooring is, the smaller the room will appear.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are not usually viewed as a good place for hardwood flooring. This is because of the almost constant exposure to moisture. Wood flooring can be used in bathrooms but it is not generally recommended.

Bedrooms & Home Offices

Wood floors work quite well in this group of rooms. In home offices, the floor needs to be protected from rolling furniture. The current trend is to use darker woods in a home office. In bedrooms, there is no trend in floor coloring. It’s a toss up between dark and light woods.
