Carpeting

Carpeting has been a popular source of flooring for decades. It is very beneficial as it adds warmth to the home, as well as acting as a source of insulation. It helps to absorb sound, contributing to a pleasant, quiet atmosphere in the home. There are numerous colors, patterns, and textures of carpeting available. Carpeting is ideal for irregular floors as it can cover all grade level surfaces. Since the selection is very large, it is easier to match your budget as the price of carpet varies greatly. In addition, installation costs are much cheaper.

Carpeting is comprised of synthetic or wool yarn loops which are sewn through a backing. The height of the loops determine the carpet’s pile. The most durable and common synthetic carpeting material is nylon, which is popular due to its stain resistance and tendency to wear well. Other synthetic materials include olefin, polyester, and acrylic. Acrylic is the most expensive synthetic as its texture is the most similar to wool. Wool is by far the most pleasant but also the priciest.

There are six characteristics to good carpeting. Ultimately, you want to select a carpet with a good appearance and durability. The first characteristic is yarn twist: the tighter the twist the better. Second is the nap. The shorter the nap, or the height of yarn, the more crush resistant the carpet will be. Next, is the stitches for per inch. More is better. Fourth, look for a good carpet cushion. Look for a label with Continuous Filament Nylon (CFN), as this will prevent pilling. Lastly, looped carpet should be tight.
