Smart Windows: Electrochromic
“Smart Windows” are the latest and greatest in window technology. The windows provide superior insulation by adapting to conditions around them. While many “smart windows” are still being developed in labs, there are a few already on the market. The windows change various properties from shading coefficients to visible transmittances, depending upon the signal they receive from the environment.
The windows are classified by the mechanism that initiates the change in the window. There are currently 4 categories: electrochromic, liquid crystal, thermochromic, and photochromic. Below we will focus on electrochromic windows.
Electrochromic windows can change from clear to dark. This technology is great for warding off solar heat or glare. It also offers privacy to buildings when desired.
Through the flip of a switch, the window’s electric field can be altered to change the thermal and optical properties of the windows. The windows operate on one to three volts and only use that energy to change their condition.
The windows are built with several layers of glass. The outside layers are transparent electronic conductors. They are followed by a counter-electrode layer and an electrochromic layer. Between these layers is an ion conductor.
