Passive Solar Home Design
When drawing up construction plans for a new house, implementing a passive solar design is a great way to both help the environment and save money. Passive solar designs are considered to be methods of creating a more “green” home. By taking into account passive solar heating and cooling when building a home, one capitalizes on the idea of efficiency and reduces energy costs without having to really do anything.
What is passive solar design?
When a building is constructed according to a passive solar design, it is erected in such a way that the layout itself reduces the need for outside heating and cooling. For example, the proper placement of windows and overhangs can reduce the amount of heat delivered into the home during the summer. The home has less of a need for air conditioning and cooling. It is even possible to arrange these features in such a way that the home still receives a good amount of solar heat in the winter.
Another example of tools used in passive solar design is the use of good insulation. By having not only properly insulated walls and ceilings, but also well-insulated windows, one can more effectively retain indoor heat during the winter and absorb less outside heat during the summer.
Even small details such as the color of the home can lend themselves to a passive solar home design. Lighter paints on the exterior of the home will absorb less sunlight.
