Interior Decorating: Faux Finishes
Every few years, different interior decorating ideas come into style and then, a few years later, are seen as passé. A few years ago, the biggest thing to do was a faux finish. Faux finishes were available to give ordinary walls extraordinary finishes.
One of the most popular ideas in faux finishes was the idea of using different objects to rag a related color over an already painted wall. Some popular items that were used include plastic bags, torn up shirts, paper bags, leaves, foil, and plastic wrap. Each of these items would provide a different look on a wall that translated to depth and visual interest. A painted wall with nothing to it but one color was seen as being boring and so ragging a lighter or darker color over the wall created visual interest.
Another option for a faux finish involved painting bricks onto a flat wall or an arched ceiling. This was done in many homes that were designed, architecturally, to look rustic and like they were out in the country. Some people went so far with trying to make their home look rustic that they had three dimensional cracks drawn onto the walls.
A final faux finish option involved applying wall putty or mud to the wall with a putty knife and then letting it dry. The wall was then lightly sanded, leaving areas of more and less dimension. This was done in an effort to make the house look more Tuscan or like the walls were actual plaster and not sheetrock.
