Installing Geothermal Pumps
Traditionally, heat is created through burning fuel. However, since fuel is expensive and not a renewable source, scientists have been investigating alternative sources of energy. Growing in popularity is geothermal energy. With geothermal, there is no need for fuel. Instead, the heat is collected from the Earth’s center and transmitted into the home. In the winter, the reverse process takes place and the warm air is displaced inside the Earth in exchange for cooler air that is brought inside the home.
Costs
Investing in geothermal energy may seem costly at the beginning. However, in the long term, you will be saving money. Electric bills are reduced by 30-40% according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a geothermal energy system. A geothermal heat pump system costs approximately $2,500 per ton of capacity. An average sized home would need 3 tons, so the cost would be approximately $7,500.
This is almost double the price of a regular heat pump system that costs about $4,000. Additionally, there is the cost of drilling. This can vary from $10,000 to $30,000 depending upon whether loops are placed horizontally or vertically. While this number looks large, the initial cost of the system will be recouped in 5 to 10 years in savings to energy bills. Also, the underground piping is very durable and often guaranteed for 25 to 50 years. Not much maintenance is required and if it is, it can usually be conducted easily through the simple mechanical components within the home.
Professionals
Installing a geothermal heat pump system is not a do-it-yourself project. Hire professionals who follow the procedures of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA). The installation process is complex, and there are many factors such as soil, climate, and size of home that need to be carefully considered.
