Garage Door Widths

One of the benefits of building a home to custom specifications is the ability to choose the garage door width and the depth of the garage overall. This is a huge advantage for individuals who have larger vehicles, larger outdoor “toys,” or those who want to be able to have plenty of space in the garage for storage.

Garage doors themselves come in a variety of widths. 8 feet, 9 feet, and 10 feet are all common, but it is also possible to have the garage doors custom made to fit exactly what is necessary. This, of course, adds cost but can make a huge difference in the functionality of the garage itself. For those with wider vehicles or less faith in their ability to get into and out of the garage, a wider garage door is a very good idea.

Another thing to consider is the overall depth of the garage. A somewhat standard depth is about 20 feet. Some garages are larger and others smaller, but 20 feet is the average. This is fine for those who may want extra space around the garage for stuff. Power tools, bikes, wagons, children’s toys, and all manner of stuff may need to live in the garage. Depending on the level of stuff one thinks one has or may accumulate, adding space in the garage is an excellent idea.

Finally, a newer feature of garages is to have one bay be double the normal depth. So basically, one bay can fit two cars while the other fits only one. This allows a family to enjoy an entire bay of storage without having to get into the larger garage doors and their motors. In addition, there is also room for expansion of the “fleet,” as long as one car or vehicle, like a golf cart, is not driven daily.
