Fun, Easy, and Interesting Wall Painting Techniques
When it comes time to paint a room for the first time, or to redo the job, most homeowners understandably focus on color. After all, the shades we choose for our rooms have a huge impact on the feeling that is created when we enter them.
However, as much time is spent debating between and within color groups, holding paint chips to the wall, and considering furniture, sunlight, and dozen other factors, comparatively little time is paid to how we will actually be applying the paint. Few people consider the number of fun, unique, and inexpensive ways to paint a room available.
Instead of sticking to the old roller and brushes next time you’re looking to paint a room, think about how one of the following techniques might add unexpected depth and character to your home.
- Sponging - Perhaps the easiest and most well-known alternative to traditional wall-to-wall painting, sponging involves dipping any uneven sponge surface lightly into the paint and applying it in small dabs. Practicing on newspaper or cardboard is a good idea if you're trying this approach for the first time. Also, make sure to vary the direction of your approach for a more natural look.
- Striped - create an interesting effect in any room by applying your paint in stripes, marked off on the wall with painter’s tape. Remember, the larger the room, the greater the width your stripes should be. For a casual, laid-back variation, do away with tapes and measurements and just paint from the gut. You may be surprised how unique and lively the room instantly becomes.
- Color Washed - Color washing is another very simple process that creates a "water-color" translucence on your walls. Just add some water to a paint base, dip with a rag, and rub over the walls. Color washing can also be used in conjunction with any other non-standard paint technique.
- Framing - An easy way to same time and money while adding significant interest to a room is to paint the areas in front of which a photograph, painting, or other wall-mounted object or decoration will hang.
