Benefits of Solar Screens

The sun can cause huge amounts of damage to any family’s checkbook through its destructive powers and its ability to heat a house and force an air conditioner to run. The sun’s rays can easily fade the fabrics on furniture as well as flooring. It also forces an air conditioner to work overtime keeping the home cool. Fortunately, there is a cost-effective way of blocking the sun’s rays from making it into the house that does not involve blocking windows.

The most cost effective way, in the long run, of blocking the sun’s rays from getting into the house at all is through the use of solar screens. A variety of studies have shown that this is the most cost-effective way of controlling heat and glare from making its way into a house. Window treatments offer some benefits but a solar screen is the best way to go about maximizing window performance and blocking out damaging UV rays.

Tinting one’s windows has proven to help to some degree but is not really feasible anymore. With the number of double-pained windows on the market, tinting is no longer feasible as the manufacturers have started including terms in their warranties that make the warranty void if the window has been tinted. This is because tinting a double-pained window can wreck the seal between the two sheets of glass.

In addition to problems with window warranties, tinting is not as effective as window screens as it doesn’t prevent the sun’s light and heat from making it to the window completely. It prevents the heat from making it past the window but that still heats the window and allows heat in. Blocking the rays before they get to the window itself is much more effective.

Finally, other studies have shown that solar screens reduce the amount of air conditioning “tonnage” that is required to cool a house by up to 1.5 tons. They also have been shown to reduce the load on the air conditioning system by 60%. These two things result in savings on both electric bills and air conditioning repairs.
